What is the difference between categories and tags on WordPress?
Categories are a broad grouping of posts. Tags describe specific details of posts and are not hierarchical. They help link related posts together. Both categories and tags split posts into smaller groups.
All WordPress posts must have a category. Posts that are not assigned categories will be labelled as “Uncategorised” by default. On the other hand, posts do not have to have tags.
It is important that posts have categories and tags because they allow content to be properly organised. They make sites easy to browse and it is recommended that sites have 5 to 10 categories and a maximum of 10 tags per posts. Furthermore, categories and tags have a significant impact on your Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Sites that use categories and tags correctly, have organised content for better usability and as a result, gain better SEO rankings.
To apply categories and tags to posts, users can access the settings on the right-hand side of the screen under ‘Document’ settings.
In this website, two main categories have been used to organise content. The category Work contains posts relating to projects, whereas Blog contains posts with written content.
