Design that Supports the Community and Environment
The Village encapsulates the concept of the design for a high school in Camperdown. Careful consideration has been taken into the design to ensure sustainability, the health of occupants and aesthetics. The idea is rooted in the saying “It takes a village to raise a child” and the effort of a community to ensure a child grows well.
Students and teachers are encouraged to move through distancing classrooms and study spaces. Sustainability is encouraged through the use of recycled materials, green roofs and passive design strategies. Furthermore, the school hall and gardens will be open to the public on weekends to support the local community.
The design of the school responds to the site in Camperdown, with most classrooms facing north to maximise daylighting. Particular uses and spaces within clusters respond to the site, such as the library being placed on the western part of the site as it was found to be the quietest. The single storey school also has the ability to expand upwards to accomodate for future population growth.
